As the year comes to end it is the perfect time for reflection. Here at YumeTwins, this means reflections on all things kawaii that came out this year!  And our favorite to come out? Games!

During 2022 Nintendo released a load of amazing games that feature some of our old-time favorite cute characters and some new adorable characters. Keep reading to see our top 5 best kawaii Nintendo characters! 

5. Inkling 

To start off our list is the Inklings from the Nintendo original game Splatoon. This year Nintendo released the highly anticipated Splatoon 3 game. Although the mechanics of the game have not changed much from the first game it certainly has made the gameplay smoother. 

If you deep dive into the ink-covered battle zones it will reveal the positive quality of life changes. The new game has a better lobbying system, multiple practicing ranges, and even better customization that make your character shine. Although there aren’t any drastic changes, Splatoon 3 has fine-tuned its base multiplayer, single-player battles, and character customization. 

In the new release, the additional customization options have improved, and we really think it makes the Inkling cuties even cuter! In this update, the hairstyles alone come in two dozen shapes and sizes. With a few exceptions, there are no limits to what styles you can pick in the chosen character species.

Nintendo character Splatoon clothing 

Within the Splatoon universe, the number of clothing brands has climbed to 22. And no two brands stock the same gear, making the selection increasingly larger. You can find stylings from Annaki’s post-punk counterculture aesthetic to Zink’s athletic attire, Splash Mob’s university fashion, and beyond! 

The Inkling characters are swift and speedy, but don’t let that fighting game spirit fool you. Fashion serves a practical purpose in the game. Every item of clothing comes equipped with abilities that modify playing style. Not only is fashion a fun way to show your personal style, it also has a practical purpose! 

4. Rosalina and Luma 

Next on our top kawaii characters list are Rosalina and Luma! With this super adorable pairing, we get a two-for-one cute character. This duo is a playable character in a lot of Mario games including Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo Super Smash Bros. Ultimate where she fights alongside various colored Lumas. Rosalina can also be found in Super Mario Odyssey, Super Mario 3D World, Super Mario Party, and Super Mario Galaxy! 

Rosalina and Luna don’t change a whole lot in their vast video game appearances, but we think there is no need to! This duo first showed up in 2007 in the widely popular Super Mario Wii: Galaxy Adventure game.

The Galaxy game is the second leading title of all time on any console, falling directly behind Nintendo’s The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time in 1998 for the Nintendo 64. 

The admiration of Rosalina and Luma doesn’t stop there, some gamers even say they deserve their own origin story as female Nintendo characters. 

3. Pichu

Pi – Pi – Pichu! The peak of adorableness is playing the baby version of Pikachu! But don’t underestimate Pichu, because they have all the charm and immense power that can obliterate opponents. Pichus are very small and plump yellow bear-like Pokemon and have immense power.

But because they are still learning how to control their power, sometimes their own shocking ability leaks out and actually ends up hurting them! You can find Pichu in the open-world game – Pokemon Legends Arceus. We don’t know about you, but when we see the large pointed black and yellow ears amongst the grass, we can’t help but fall more in love! 

2. Isabelle 

Our favorite hard-working pooch takes her spot as the second most kawaii character! Isabelle first appeared in Animal Crossing: New Leaf as the assistant to the island’s mayor. She later re-appeared in Animal Crossing New Horizons in her new role as the head of the Civic Consultation Counter at the Resident Service Building. 

But Isabelle isn’t just the mediator between islander issues, she’s also a force to be reckoned with as a fighter! She appears in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe as a playable character! Her often quiet approach can lead to some exciting battling, especially when she is armed with a Slingshot or Fishing Rod.

Isabelle is fierce both on and off the island. Her adorable fashion sense, and the fact that her hair looks like a bell makes her an adorable, well-loved, and famous Nintendo Character. 

Nintendo character #1: Kirby 

Finally, at number one! It’s our favorite pink Nintendo character – Kirby! Kirby is a power-absorbing waddling puffball who has brightened Nintendo game lists for decades. The cute pink blobs’ infectious bright and bubbly personality shines through in every game that they appear in.

Kirby was first seen in Kirby’s Dream Land (1992), and since then Kirby has starred in over 40 games. They range from action platformers to puzzle games, racing games, and even the smash-hit Super Smash Bros. series.

The latest and greatest Kirby games on Switch are Kirby and the Forgotten Land. This party game is an amazing and involved modern platformer, with a surprising amount of content! This aesthetically pleasing game is fun, relaxing, and a great way to experience the all-around cuteness of Kirby! 

Kirby has lived a lifetime of being super adorable, and we really don’t think that is going to change anytime soon!
