Magical Girl Companions in Anime and Video Games!

Magical girl stories are filled with action, friendship, and fantasy, but their companions play just as important a role. These creatures guide, protect, and support the heroes on their journeys, often offering wisdom and emotional strength.

From Cardcaptor Sakura to Futari wa Pretty Cure, these companions help shape the story. Some provide comic relief, while others hold deep secrets that influence the magical world for heroines and heroes alike!

Cerberus (CardCaptor Sakura)

Cerberus, often called “Kero” by his friends, is the guardian of the magical Clow Cards. When Sakura Kinomoto accidentally releases these cards, Cerberus appoints her as the Cardcaptor and guides her in retrieving them. In his everyday form, he appears as a small, plush-like creature with orange fur and tiny wings. However, his true form is a majestic, lion-like beast with large wings and armor.

Both forms of Cerberus (aka Kero) from "Cardcaptor Sakura". The left form resembles a majestic lion with wings and metal armor. The right is his "false" form, where he resembles a winged lion cub.

Kero-chan has a playful and sometimes bossy personality. He loves sweets and video games and often provides comic relief in the series. Despite his lighthearted demeanor, he takes his role seriously and deeply cares for Sakura, offering her wisdom and protection throughout her journey. His Osakan accent adds to his unique charm, making him a memorable and beloved character among fans.

Luna and Artemis (Sailor Moon)

These two characters are magical cats who serve as advisors to the Sailor Guardians. Luna, a black cat with a crescent moon on her forehead, appears first. She guides Usagi Tsukino in becoming Sailor Moon and helps assemble the Sailor Guardians. Luna provides wisdom and support, aiding the Guardians in their battles against evil forces. Despite her serious demeanor, she deeply cares for Usagi and the others.

Artemis, a white cat also bearing a crescent moon symbol, is the partner of Sailor Venus. He trained her when she was Sailor V and continues to support her as Sailor Venus. Artemis is more easygoing than Luna and shares a close bond with Minako, often providing her with guidance and encouragement. Luna and Artemis play crucial roles in mentoring and supporting the Sailor Guardians in their quest to protect the world.

Gallica (Metaphor: Refantazio)

Gallica is a fairy character in the game Metaphor: ReFantazio, and she assists a magical boy, rather than a magical girl. She has short orange hair covering one eye, blue eyes, and multicolored wings. Her outfit includes a yellow leotard with a heart-shaped cutout for her wings, a black choker, and a silver headband. She wears a winged knight’s visor, cyan thigh-high boots, elbow-length fingerless gloves, and a sword scabbard in dungeons or battles.

As the protagonist’s longtime friend and guide, Gallica is quick-witted and sensible. Unlike other fairies, who are often carefree and playful, she is serious and knowledgeable. Although she doesn’t participate in combat, Gallica provides valuable guidance throughout the journey. Her unique personality sets her apart from other fairies in the game, and her loyalty and wisdom make her an indispensable companion in the adventure.

Mokona (Magic Knight Rayearth)

Mokona is a playful, rabbit-like creature from the magical girl series Magic Knight Rayearth by CLAMP. Resembling a fluffy white bunny with long ears and a red gem on its forehead, Mokona communicates by saying “puu” in various tones. Despite its simple appearance, Mokona is crucial in guiding the Magic Knights on their quest in Cephiro. The red gem on its forehead can produce essential items like food, shelter, and transportation.

Its cheerful and mischievous personality often provides comic relief, balancing the series’ more serious moments. Still, beyond its supportive role, Mokona holds deeper significance within the story, revealed in the second arc (spoilers!). Mokona is also featured in other works by CLAMP, most notably Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicles and xxxHolic, where two Mokona connect alternate dimensions and the series together.

Mepple and Mipple (Futari wa Pretty Cure)

They are key fairy characters from the anime series Futari wa Pretty Cure. Mepple partners with Nagisa Misumi, enabling her to transform into Cure Black. He is lemon-yellow with navy-blue eyes and often ends his sentences with “-mepo”. Mepple is known for his arrogant and selfish demeanor, frequently clashing with Nagisa due to their similar stubborn personalities.

Mipple resides with Honoka Yukishiro, granting her the ability to become Cure White. She is pale pink with dark crimson eyes and concludes her sentences with “-mipo“. Unlike Mepple, Mipple is reserved, patient, and kind-hearted, often providing comfort and advice to Honoka. Her nurturing nature extends to Pollun, a younger fairy she treats like a younger brother.

Why are these magical girl companions important?

People appreciate magical companions because they provide guidance and support. Many magical girls are inexperienced, so their companions help them understand their powers and responsibilities.

These magical creatures also add charm and personality to their stories. Cerberus and Mepple bring humor, balancing the tension of battle with lighthearted moments. Meanwhile, Gallica stands out for her intensity and knowledge, proving that not all magical guides are laid back.

Others, like Mokona, even have a more profound role in the story, revealing important secrets about their worlds. Which magical companion is your favorite? Which moment did you like the best? Let us know in the comments below!
