Vocaloid Icons: Five Characters to Check Out!

Hatsune Miku may be the world’s most popular and instantly recognizable Vocaloid, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t plenty of others to fall in love with! With characters spanning the full range of voices and songs in the Vocaloid catalog, there’s absolutely a character for everyone.

If you’re looking for a suave tough guy, a bubbly young girl, or a mysterious girl inspired by a lunar legend, there’s a character for you! If you want to learn more about the Vocaloids and find out who else besides Miku, this is the article to read!

Megurine Luka

Megurine Luka is a groundbreaking Vocaloid who was the first to create music in both Japanese and English. Her bilingual design philosophy permeates every aspect of her character, and her name means “songs to all around the world as scent spreads.”

Her asymmetrical outfit symbolizes her ability to perform in two languages. Fans adore her unique design and humorously associate her with tuna due to her name’s similarity to the Japanese word “maguro.”

Kaito

Kaito is one of the oldest Vocaloid characters, created during the music software’s first iteration. As such, there has been some misinformation and misinterpretation of his appearance and personality. When Kaito was first created, there was no interest in assigning him a definitive look. But when the character was reintroduced, fans took to the internet to debate what he should look like and how old he is.

Technically, he doesn’t have an official age or look, which makes him very versatile amongst fans. Usually, though, he can be seen as a middle-aged man with blue hair and a blue muffler wrapped over his shoulders. Kaito is also the Vocaloid responsible for creating the Item War meme that’s become popular amongst fans.

Kamui Gakupo

Gakupo is a particularly interesting Vocaloid based on the real-life megastar Gackt. Gackt, a rockstar himself, also lent his voice to Gakupo, making the Vocaloid feel like a digital version of the singer. Even his name, Gakupo, plays on Gackt’s name and the idea that Gakupo is simply a Vocaloid version of Gackt himself.

His outfit is slick cyber samurai, with a razor-sharp katana that makes music when swung. Of all the Vocaloids, Gakupo is one of the few to have his Item Wars meme come into the real world; fans can buy an eggplant with little stick legs with his official Nendoroid figure.

Yuzuki Yukari

Yuzuki Yukari has a cool reputation among her fellow Vocaloids. She is one of the few with an astronomical theme. Her character is based on the legend of the moon rabbit, an old folktale in Japanese culture that tells how a rabbit lives on the moon.

This story can be seen in countless places across Japanese culture, with Yuzuki being a prime example. Her name implies that she brings people worldwide together with her voice, which is the perfect thing for a Vocaloid to do. Her name can also be read as bringing sound and/or the moon to people, which also plays into her moon rabbit aesthetic.

V Flower

V Flower is a mysterious and quiet Vocaloid. However, she is secretly full of love and positivity for those who get to know her. Her name, “Flower,” reflects her desire to bloom through her music. The “V” indicates her status as a Vocaloid, so “V Flower” is her full name (though the V is not always necessary).

Some people describe V Flower as a kuudere who appears stiff and unemotional in a group. Although she may seem blank initially, she opens up greatly when people get to know her—much like a flower blooming. Another interesting aspect of V Flower is her androgynous voice. It makes her suitable for vocal arrangements for both male and female vocals.

Why are these Vocaloid characters special?

These Vocaloid characters are special because they help bring the Vocaloid program to life! Vocaloids are music, and while music is a universal joy for people worldwide, it can be fun to attribute personalities and styles to the voices people use to make music.

It can be easy to only think of Hatsune Miku when Vocaloids come up, but as these characters prove, there is far more to the program than just one girl. These characters represent years of community engagement, interaction, and development. They are the faces that fans have fallen in love with and the voices that bring fans’ love for music to life.
