Who is Kuromi: A Sanrio Icon!

A thumbnail of Kuromi.

Kuromi looks different from many of the other members of Sanrio Town. Dressed in a black jester’s hat with a pink skull on the front and a black devil’s tail swinging behind her, Kuromi looks like a mischievous little imp who wants nothing more than to wreak havoc in Sanrio Town. Fortunately for everyone, that couldn’t be farther from the truth!

Well, who is she?

Kuromi is a little white rabbit who lives in Sanrio Town and was born on October 31, Halloween; she has the coolest birthday in the world! She is a tough tomboy who is a super sweet girl underneath her gruff exterior.

Despite liking to dress in black with skulls, Kuromi likes romance novels like Sugar Sweethearts Forever. She’s just worried people will judge her if they ever learn the truth about her. She also likes to write in her diary and cook in her spare time. Her favorite foods are all kinds of meat, shallots, and cherries.

For many years, she considered My Melody her archrival due to a lifetime of wrongdoings she suffered at her hand. What kind of wrongdoings did My Melody commit? Like eating the last pickled onion from Kuromi’s food tray for starters (which is an archrival-worthy offense!) Kuromi has written down everything My Melody has ever done to her in her book called the “Kuromi Note,” with over 6,324 entries and counting.

Kuromi likes to hang out with her friends Nyanmi, Wanmi, Konmi, and Chumi. Together, they form a bike gang called the “Kuromi 5.” Riding around on their tricycles, she and her friends like to cause a ruckus around Sanrio Town, similar to the classic bosozoku girl-biker culture.

Why is Kuromi so famous?

Kuromi enjoys great popularity due to her fabulous style and aesthetics. Her black and hot pink color scheme, devil tail, and skull motifs have made her popular with the goth, scene, and emo crowds. Devilish and cool, she has a cute figure that appeals to many people (even though she’s a big ol’ softie deep down.)

In 2021, a campaign called “KUROMIfy the World” was launched for her fans. Kuromi received her social media pages, ad bus, and the song “Greedy Greedy.” This was the ultimate celebration of all her fans, known as Kuromies.

What shows and games has she starred in?

Kuromi first appeared in Onegai My Melody. This is the only time Kuromi has been portrayed as a villain in My Melody. In this story, Kuromi writes in her notebook all the things that My Melody has done to her.

When she travels to the human world, she meets Keiichi Hiiragi, a handsome young violinist, and falls in love with him. However, a force known as the Dark Power chooses Keiichi to power up Kuromi’s weapon, the Melody Key, with one hundred Black Notes for her to take revenge on My Melody.

In the show Hello Kitty and Friends Supercute Adventures, Kuromi is still a tomboy but no longer out for revenge. She likes to hang out with her friends Keroppi and Badtz-Maru (who she now has a secret crush on). Kuromi has her own Halloween store in Sanrio Town, which she enjoys running. My Melody lives next door to her, as the two are no longer rivals, which is a nice change of pace for the pair.

In 2023, Kuromi received a brand-new anime on YouTube called Kuromi’s Pretty Journal. Traveling the world in her own Kuromi blimp to find her long-lost big sister, Romina, Kuromi gets into fun adventures while meeting plenty of new friends.

Who is she in real life?

Kuromi and My Melody have a café in Japan that fans can visit. Halloween is an especially great time to visit their café as they have plenty of cool and spooky treats to eat, such as bat cookies, pumpkin mousse, and more. They also serve dinner, so any time of day is a great time to visit their cafe!

Fans of Kuromi can also meet her in person if they take a trip to Sanrio Puroland, Sanrio’s theme park. Sanrio Puroland is the place to go to buy all the best Kuromi gear and experience Sanrio in person! Is there a better way of celebrating your love of the cool rabbit and all of her friends than by spending an afternoon with them?

Kuromi is the whole package for Sanrio fans. She’s a spunky little punk with style and a sweetheart who likes to cook and read romance novels. She’s tough, but not too tough. She pretends to be a hardcore little cookie, but she just likes to have fun with her friends. Why do you like her so much? Is she your favorite, or is My Melody your favorite? (We promise we won’t tell!) Let us know in the comments below!
