The world of Cardcaptor Sakura is rife with magic, adventure, danger, and action! As Sakura Kinomoto scours the world for the super-powerful Clow Cards she unwittingly releases, the powers of light and darkness collide in massive magical battles!
As every Clow Card is entirely different and possessed by a different spirit, some are helpful and benevolent, while others are extremely dangerous and antagonistic. There are many Clow Cards, but these are the five any fan should know about!
The Clow Cards are cards named after Clow Reed, the powerful magician who created them. They’re not sentient beings that Clow trapped, but rather the physical incarnations of elemental forces distilled into magical form (if that makes sense.)
Clow Reed intended to create powerful conduits to become a brand-new type of magic. Only highly trained and powerful magicians could use the Clow Cards, and as Sakura Kinomoto was The Chosen One, it made perfect sense why she was up to the task.
Depending on which version of Cardcaptor you’re diving into, there are a different number of cards. In the manga, there are 19 cards for Sakura to find, while in the anime, there are 53 (the original 19 plus an additional 39 are only seen in the anime.)
With many cards to choose from, each having unique abilities, it’s hard to pick the best ones. However, the following five cards are fan favorites because of their power and impact on Sakura’s journey!
The Flower is, by and large, a card without any real offensive power. It might seem odd to start this list with such a card, but there’s something just wonderfully iconic in its presentation and personality. The Flower is a young woman in a bright pink dress overflowing with frills. Her hair is also bright pink and worn in two tightly curled pigtails.
Overall, the Flower card isn’t evil; it just enjoys itself. It caused some trouble at Tomoeda Elementary’s field day, but when Sakura confronted it, they danced together.
The Light is one of the most powerful Clow Cards as it personifies light. As a spirit, The Light is a gorgeous and calm woman dressed in a pale white dress. Her demeanor is kind and reassuring, and she aids Sakura as needed throughout the series (in a very important and major way).
But as there cannot be Light without Darkness, The Light is always paired with her sister, The Dark. The Light’s powers are total light manipulation and resistance to all physical attacks.

The Windy is one of the first Clow Cards Sakura encounters in her adventure. When the Book of Cards was opened, The Windy returned to Sakura without any issue or provocation. As a spirit, The Windy is a gentle fairy with long, flowing blonde hair. The Windy may be a gentle pacifist, but as it’s also one of the four primary elements, it harbors great power.
The Mirror is a tricky card due to its very nature. As the representation of mirrored images, It can cause chaos if left unchecked. The spirit of the Mirror takes the form of a young girl with a small mirror on her forehead, dressed in an elegant Chinese dress. The Mirror has the ability to become a perfect imitation of any being it chooses, and it can also reflect projectile attacks away from its wielder.
Of all the Clow Cards, few are as powerful as The Nothing, a card that could be possibly the most powerful of all time. The Nothing is the representation of the state of nothingness, and as such, its powers are frightening in their intensity. Anything caught within its void is imprisoned until it returns to total nothingness.
As if that wasn’t bad enough, The Nothing can also manipulate reality by bringing inanimate objects to life and nullifying electrical fields. Deep within its circular black void, nothing is shown to be a very young girl in a pale dress. As a child, it might explain why The Nothing possesses both the ability to destroy and a gentle melancholy about itself, as well.
The Clow Cards are strong because they were created to be the incarnations of every imaginable element. And just like the elements, they can be incredibly wonderful or horrible. They can bring joy and peace to those around them or pain and destruction if left unchecked. Clow Reed is considered one of the world’s most powerful magicians, and the Clow Cards were created with a skill and power that is not often seen.
This is why it was crucial for Sakura to hunt down every card and seal them; if left alone, there’s no telling what would have befallen the world. Which Clow Cards are your favorite? Did we forget any of them? Please let us know in the comments below! We would love to hear why you love Clow Cards!
