The 90s was a golden age for anime. This era produced many animation series and movies that are considered classics today. Some, like Dragon Ball Z and Neon Genesis Evangelion, eventually became global hits. But many other fantastic series went unnoticed by international audiences.

These fantastic shows captured the artistic feel of the decade with gripping plots, striking art, and innovative storytelling. Whether you’re a longtime fan or just getting into retro titles, these underrated series deserve a spot on your watchlist! Look at some of the best 90s anime you might have missed!

Outlaw Star

Outlaw Star is a sci-fi adventure with a touch of Western flavor. Its unique mix of action, comedy, and detailed artwork makes this show a cult favorite. It takes viewers on a high-stakes, faster-than-light journey through the “Toward Stars Era” universe. The story follows the reckless bounty hunter Gene Starwind and his crew as they search for the legendary Galactic Leyline. Along the way, they encounter dangerous mercenaries, mysterious aliens, killer cyborgs, and powerful space pirates!

However, it was overshadowed by a very similar Cowboy Bebop, which was a lot more successful globally. But the series still delivers its own special brand of charm and excitement. Its detailed world-building and fast-paced galactic battles set it apart from other space-themed anime. The cast of supporting misfits, including the mysterious Melfina and the cat-girl Aisha Clanclan, grow on the viewer quickly. If you love classic space opera, action, and adventure, this is for you!

Kodocha

Kodocha (short for Kodomo no Omocha) is a comedic situational drama that follows the energetic child actress Sana Kurata. She does her best to balance her school life and her successful career. However, her life turns chaotic when she meets Akito Hayama, a troubled classmate with a secret and painful past. The result is a hilarious and emotional relationship, creating a roller coaster of feelings!

Unlike typical school dramas, Kodocha relies more on its fast-paced humor than heartfelt moments. However, it still manages to explore deeper themes such as family struggles, mental health, and personal growth. Its witty dialogue and fourth-wall-breaking antics make this series a beloved but unknown classic. Kodomo no Omocha is perfect for those seeking a show with emotional depth but with frequent comedic breaks!

Revolutionary Girl Utena

This surreal and visually stunning masterpiece redefines the magical girl genre. It follows Utena Tenjou, a strong-willed girl who aspires to become a prince rather than a princess! She eventually starts school at Ohtori Academy, where students participate in strange sword duels. The prize is the right to be engaged to a girl named Anthy Himemiya, also known as the “Rose Bride”. As the story unfolds, Utena discovers her own identity and the dark secrets of the academy.

Its deep symbolism and thought-provoking imagery make Revolutionary Girl Utena stand out among other shows. The series tackles issues such as power structures, society’s expectations, and gender identity—heavy themes for an anime series! But its dreamlike style, colorful animation, and theatrical storytelling relieve any uncomfortable tension. This is truly an ambitious 90s anime. It’s best suited to those looking for hidden meanings and abstract storytelling!

GTO

In Great Teacher Onizuka (GTO), former gang member Eikichi Onizuka changes his life and becomes a high school teacher. His teaching methods are a bit unconventional because of his rough background, but he is determined to become the greatest teacher ever, and his genuine care for his students shines through. He helps them overcome personal struggles, including bullying, family issues, and academic problems. This anime is a mixture of comedy and action with just the right amount of heart!!

On the surface, GTO’s main theme seems to be light humor: Onizuka’s rebellious personality sometimes results in a ridiculous classroom environment and hilarious situations. But, under the hijinks, there is an emotional message. His dedication and well-meaning intentions can teach us all a lot about life lessons, the importance of mentorship, and dedication!

Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure (1993 original)

Modern fans are mostly familiar with the 2012 reboot of Jojo. But Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure wasn’t always the mainstream phenomenon it is today. Before its modern popularity, there was the 1993 OVA (Original Video Animation) series. OVAs are special bonus episodes made for video or DVD release unrelated to the central plot. The original 1993 OVA adapted the “Stardust Crusaders” story arc. It follows Jotaro Kujo and his allies as they travel to Egypt to defeat the evil vampire Dio Brando.

The intense battles and unique art style of the 1993 original brought Jojo’s signature strangeness to life! Its darker tone and detailed animation provide a different take on the Jojo universe. And Jotaro’s final battle with Dio remains one of the most thrilling moments in 90s anime! The 1993 version holds a special place in the hearts of true Jojo fans and is worth checking out!
