Japan Opens a Kawaii Poop Museum And It’s Oddly Endearing

Japan’s pop culture is a powerhouse for creating colorful, eye catching, and captivating work that is shared and loved all around the world. Because the work from Japan has such a different and “kawaii” style, it has set them apart on a global scale. Japan is also famous for producing some of the most wacky and unconventional artwork out there. And Yokohama’s new poo museum is no exception.

You heard it right. This spring, there will be an entire interactive art museum dedicated to poo. And the weirdest part is, it is actually kind of cute?! The genius methodology behind this is that Japan has, yet again, found a way to bring two polarizing concepts together. They managed to introduce that “kawaii” art style to something as foul and stinky as… well, poo.

The Unko Museum, unko meaning poop in Japanese, has outlined 3 different themes in this interactive museum. The first being a step a light projection game, visitors can step on brightly colored poos that cause them to virtually splatter on the ground. Sounds disgustingly fun right?

There will also be a section of the museum for those social media junkies out there who need to take the perfect shot for their Instagram feed. And what better way to pull in the likes than with a backdrop made up of neon poop coils in the background? And finally, if games and photos shoots aren’t your cup of tea,  there is an intellectually stimulating section to gander at poop sketches created by visitors. You can even leave your own poop art!

The Unko Museum will open on March 15 and run until July 15.

Advance tickets are available here for 1,600 yen for adults and 900 yen for kids.

Museum Address: Kanagawa-ken, Yokohama-shi, Nishi-ku, Takashima 2-14-9, Asobuild 2nd floor

神奈川県横浜市西区高島2丁目14−9 アソビル2F ALE-BOX内
