Kirby is one of Nintendo’s most popular characters, with his eye-catching design and ability to swallow anything and anyone. He’s gone beyond video games into his own manga and anime series. But if you’re looking for a new Kirby experience, you’re in luck.
Japan is home to not one but two Kirby Cafés. Here’s everything you need to know about them—where they’re located, what they sell—and why you should visit them. Kirby Café ni Ikimashou! (Let’s go to the Kirby Café!)
The Kirby Café is a particular project that Kirby and the Waddle Dees created. With help and ideas from Chef Kawasaki, they cook delicious food and make fun memories with customers in Pupupurand.
Nintendo opened several temporary Kirby Cafés in late 2016 in Osaka, Tokyo, and Nagoya. They were so popular that the Tokyo location reopened in 2018 and became permanent in 2019. A year later, another permanent café opened in Hakata Ward, Fukuoka.
There are pictures and figurines of Kirby and friends inside and outside the café. The seating area is big but cozy, with decor inspired by the Whispy Woods. Close by is the brightly colored gift shop where you can buy Kirby treats and merch.
The first Kirby Café is in Tokyo Solamachi MISE, the shopping mall inside Tokyo SkyTree. It’s on the fourth floor in the Japanese souvenirs area, where Pokémon, Hello Kitty, and other character shops can be found.
Address: Tokyo Skytree Town Solamachi East Yard 4F 9, 1-1-2 Oshiage, Sumida-ku, Tokyo
Hours: 10 am to 10 pm every day
Tokyo SkyTree is Japan’s tallest structure at 634 m (2080 ft), with 450 floors and over 300 shops. It’s also home to the Sumida Aquarium and Konica Minolta Planetarium Tenku. Nearby, you’ll find other tourist attractions, including Sumida Park and Tokyo Mizumachi (“Water Town”).
Fukuoka’s Kirby Café is inside Canal City Hakata. The mall has five buildings with over 200 stores, two hotels, a theater, and many more. The canal also hosts “Dancing Water” shows during the day, while at night, it hosts the “Canal Aqua Panorama” using 3D projection mapping.
Address: Canal City Hakata North Building B1F, 1-2-1 Sumiyoshi, Hakata-ku, Fukuoka City, Fukuoka Prefecture
Hours: 11 am to 10 pm every day
