Sailor Moon has captured the hearts and minds of fans worldwide for thirty years. Of course, it’s only fitting that rumors have also circulated about the series creator, Naoko Takeuchi.
From general ideas about the series to more personal rumors about Naoko-san’s life, these are some of the more prevalent rumors about Sailor Moon that need to be addressed!
One of the biggest rumors about Sailor Moon is that Naoko Takeuchi had no friends when she was younger. While it is true that Takeuchi has stated that she created the Sailor Scouts to be the kind of girl she wanted to be friends with, this does not mean that she lived a young life devoid of friendship.
Takeuchi was a member of the astronomy and manga clubs in high school. She also attended the Kyoritsu College of Pharmacy, earned a degree in chemistry, and became a licensed pharmacist before becoming a full-time manga artist. To think that Takeuchi was a hermit who spent her hours drawing alone is false.
Sailor Mercury (aka Best Girl) has earned a bad rap over the years for having significantly less valuable powers than the other Sailor Scouts. This is 110%, no questions asked, not true. While her ability to dowse unaided is very circumstantial as a battle technique, that does not make it less valuable. In battle, Sailor Mercury can manipulate water. When compared to the explosive powers of Sailor Mars and Jupiter, Sailor Mercury’s attacks may seem much weaker, but that doesn’t make them useless.
Early in the series, Sailor Mercury would often bind and addle foes, allowing the other Sailor Scouts to launch their attacks against them. In more recent iterations, however, Sailor Mercury has been shown to project her water-based attacks capable of destroying enemies on her own. Her Shine Aqua Illusion can freeze enemies or create ice walls as a defensive maneuver. Useless? Hardly.
One of the best running gags in the series is how Tuxedo Mask shows up with a flourish of his cape and a toss of his rose…and then does nothing. Stylish monologuing and some pretty svelte posing aside, even Sailor Moon has cracked a few jokes about Tuxedo Mask not doing much in battle.
While this might be true in most cases, Tuxedo Mask does things in the series. He’s a great distraction, for one. He’s also very good at getting captured. So, while he might not be the best fighter or tactician in the world, he certainly plays the role of the damsel in distress very well. He’s handsome, and he has some excellent one-liners. That alone gives him a pass.

Sailor Saturn is easily one of the most tragic characters in the entire series, and it was never her fault. When the villain known as Germatoid traveled to Earth, he triggered an explosion that killed Sailor Saturn. Her father, Professor Souichi Tomoe, became so consumed with grief that he agreed to let her body become possessed by the entity of Mistress 9.
As such, Sailor Saturn’s powers of death, ruin, and destruction, while powerful and dire, were not hers to control. She is best considered a tragic hero, and for those who finished her arc, she became in control of her body once more. To say that Sailor Saturn is a villain is to completely misunderstand her backstory, her inability to control her body, and her ignoring her character development later in the series.
It’s never good to walk around with misinformation and erroneous ideas about something, whatever it may be. For Sailor Moon, it’s essential to have all the facts straight in real life and within the show. It’s perfectly understandable if someone hasn’t been able to read or watch the entire series. Not only is it long, but with so many different sequel series, movies, and reboots, it can be challenging to keep track of everything.
This is perfectly okay. However, listening to a rumor without checking its accuracy isn’t okay. The rumors that have been covered range from the silly and innocuous to the more impactful for the series. Not only are some of them just not true, they also wholly misrepresent entire characters.
