For good reason, Nintendo is one of the world’s biggest and most popular video game developers of all time. They are home to countless beloved game series, including Super Mario, The Legend of Zelda, Metroid, and many more. Among these super famous series is everyone’s favorite little pink puffball, Kirby, and he even has his own movies!
The guardian of Dreamland has been bringing joy and excitement to players ever since his debut on the original Game Boy. Kirby’s fame and popularity have made him the prime candidate to receive multiple movie roles over the years!
Kirby debuted in 1992’s Kirby’s Dreamland on the Game Boy. The game featured the titular hero (who was then white and not pink) as he traveled across Dreamland to defeat King Dedede and rescue the stolen Sparking Stars. Kirby proved a massive success; countless sequels have explored and expanded Kirby’s world.
Kirby’s Dreamland 2, Kirby’s Adventure, Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards, and many other games have brought Kirby to life on nearly all of Nintendo’s systems. Kirby has become one of Nintendo’s biggest and most popular mascots. He is known for his boundless joy, optimism, and cute little voice. No matter what dangers threaten Dreamland, Kirby always rises to the occasion. He floats, eats, and fights his way to victory.
The colorful world of Dreamland is perfect for a movie setting. Luckily, several movies feature Kirby, the little pink hero. It’s important to know that none of these movies are major AAA Hollywood productions. They were not released in theaters.
Aside from a few small productions, Kirby’s adventures in cinema have largely been fan-made projects. So, as long as it’s understood that all but one of the following movies are not official Nintendo projects but are simply fan passion projects, here are a handful of movies starring Kirby!
True to its name, Kirby: The Peaceful Adventure in Dreamland is a cute and silly game. It is more laid-back than typical Kirby games. When Kirby and his friends visit the Land of Shine, they discover something remarkable. The inhabitants are throwbacks to classic games and characters from Kirby’s past.
Rather than being hired as a hero to fight a great evil, Kirby takes part in a soccer match. It might not have all the same stakes as his more famous video game moments, but The Peaceful Adventure in Dreamland is a silly and cute romp that lets Kirby catch his breath and have fun.

When Kamikai, a young dragon, embarks on his quest, he stumbles across Kirby. Together, the two heroes travel to a large coliseum. It’s a simple plot, filled with typical Kirby hijinks, but watching Kirby get teamed up with a dragon is always a good time.
Kirby and Princess Blossom are best friends, making their parting particularly bittersweet. Princess Blossom has to go to the fairy castle academy even though she doesn’t want to; when Kirby misinterprets the note she left behind for him, he believes that she’s been kidnapped! Kirby then embarks on a quest to save his friend from a horrible fate that doesn’t exist!
Unlike the other entries on this list, Fright to the Finish is a real Kirby movie officially licensed by Nintendo. As Kirby and his allies finally approach Nightmare’s Fortress, they know the battle to end all battles awaits them deep inside.
Technically speaking, Fright to the Finish isn’t exactly a movie, but the final five episodes of Kirby: Right Back At Ya! (Kirby’s 2001 anime series.) As it finishes the series, it has plenty of drama, suspense, and action. By fusing the final five episodes, Fright to the Finish can be considered a film in practice, even if it wasn’t originally developed to be one.
Watching Kirby’s movies is a fun way to get more enjoyment from the little pink puffball. This is why so many of Kirby’s films are fan projects and why Fright to the Finish is just the final leg of Right Back At Ya! Nintendo had no interest in risking another cinematic misfire. But with the success of 2023’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie, there has been news that a new, official film, Kirby: The Rise of the Mayhem Adventures, will be released via Netflix in 2026.
It’s fantastic and exciting to see Nintendo’s characters finally get the cinematic treatment they’ve deserved all these years. If Nintendo consistently produces film adaptations as good as The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Kirby, Link, Zelda, and Samus will be in excellent hands.
