Cardcaptor Sakura Characters: A Main Character Intro Guide

If you love Japanese pop culture, especially anime and manga, you must have heard of or even been a big fan of Cardcaptor Sakura. Originally written in 1996 by CLAMP, Cardcaptor Sakura still remains one of the most popular magical girl anime and manga series of all time. Its unique and adorable character lineup is definitely one the biggest attractions contributing to the series’ success! Let’s look through the main Cardcaptor Sakura characters of the series again to see if you still remember their charms!

Sakura Kinomoto

Our protagonist is a 10-year old girl studying at Tomoeda Elementary School. Sakura is a cute young girl with big bright eyes, small plump lips, and short hair that hugs her chubby face.

Despite being the guardian of the Clow cards and potentially the strongest magician in the Cardcaptor universe, Sakura is indeed just like any other ordinary girl: innocent, always cheerful yet can be clumsy and clueless sometimes. And according to her older brother, she tends to walk very heavily.

She is also very active and cheerful with slightly tomboyish hobbies like playing sports, roller skating, and playing video games. However, she hates math and is afraid of ghosts.

Why We Love Sakura (and Her Outfits)

Sakura’s optimistic and reliable personality allows her to be friendly with everyone. She’s very outgoing and gives her all towards the friendships she creates with everyone, whether they’re strangers, acquaintances, or rivals.

The most impressive thing about Sakura is definitely her outfit collection. Her most iconic everyday outfits are her Japanese school uniform – a sailor-type uniform – and combat outfit, which changes depending on the episode (usually tied to whatever magical cards she has to capture that day).

Thanks to her friend Tomoyo, Sakura always appears adorable and charming every time she takes on a new mission in her Cardcaptor adventures.

If you are looking for a kawaii aesthetic-inspired outfit, we recommend checking out the combat outfit collections of Sakura: from cute animals, like cats or sheep, to cool unique styles, like Prince Charming. It can be said that Sakura’s outfits in every episode is what contributes most to her cuteness! It’s hard to resist falling in love with Sakura as both an amazing Cardcaptor and a lovely cute preteen girl!

Tomoyo Daidouji

She is Sakura’s closest friend and maternal cousin. Like a living doll, she has long, loose, dark violet hair with cute bangs, and big sparkling eyes.

Tomoyo is the daughter of the President of Daidouji Toy Company, Daidouji Sonomi. So, she has a whole team of female bodyguards accompanying her to protect and help wherever she goes. Despite her wealth, she’s never arrogant or conceited because of it. On the contrary, Tomoyo is very affectionate, kind, and generous with everyone.

As for Sakura, she has always had a secret love for her friend as you can tell through her attentive care towards Sakura.

Why We Love Tomoyo

In the Japanese version, she always speaks using formal conjugations and expressive expressions, giving her an air of sophistication & uniqueness among the characters.

Tomoyo was the first to know Sakura was a Cardcaptor and kept this secret. She also took charge of filming Sakura’s battles and enjoys making costumes for Sakura to wear in each battle. In addition, she is also one of Sakura’s most effective supporters with her keen intelligence, exquisite observation ability, and boundless enthusiasm for her close friend.

Who wouldn’t love to have such a lovely and encouraging friend like Tomoyo in real life, right? That’s what makes her one of the most adorable Cardcaptor Sakura characters in the whole series.

Cerberus (or Keruberosu)

Keruberosu, which is often shortened to Kero-chan or Kero, is the summoned beast that rules over the Fire and Earth Clow cards, with his symbol being the Sun. Kero was assigned by Clow Reed, the creator of the Clow cards, to find a new owner for the cards when he died.

After Sakura accidentally released the cards, Kero selected her as a candidate and taught her the basics of capturing cards.

His true form is pretty stunning – a giant leopard or lion-like creature having huge wings and wearing a beautifully decorated armor plate. However, you’ll mostly see him in a cuter version since he usually disguises himself as a yellow stuffed animal with small white wings.

Why We Love Kero

Kero is quite bossy, demanding, and has a great appetite, but he really cares about Sakura and believes that she will become the next owner of the Clow cards. That’s why he acts as a guide for Sakura as her magical powers develop.

Because the Clow deck was located in Osaka for a long time, naturally Kero speaks with an Osaka dialect, known for its relaxed manner and unique slang words. In stuffed animal form, Kero speaks in a high-pitched, child-like voice, but in his full form, his voice drops to an adult-like low. It is the duality between the two sides of Kero that makes him stand out among all of the Cardcaptor Sakura characters as both funny and entertaining to watch!

Syaoran Li

Syaoran Li is another main character of the series and a distant relative of Clow Reed – creator of the Clow cards. As a member of the Li clan in Hong Kong, to which Clow’s mother was a member, Li Syaoran believes that he is the rightful owner of the Clow cards and not Sakura.

Syaoran has short, chestnut hair and large, amber eyes. Unlike Sakura who is always active, Syaoran is a kind, shy, gentle boy who learns magic, reads the books Clow Reed wrote, and hates Japanese grammar. His magical abilities means that he fits into the magical boy anime character type as well!

Syaoran first appeared as Sakura’s rival in the story, capturing a few strong cards for himself (and with the help of his cousin in the anime). His initial attitude towards her was cold, critical, and awkward, to the point of never even calling her by her first name until the third season. In fact, he often bluntly criticized her for her shortcomings and clumsiness.

Why We Love Syaoran

However, as the series progresses, and especially after Sakura is officially made the new master of the cards, Syaoran abandons his antagonistic attitude, and becomes a trusted ally and a dear friend.

As they spend more time together, Syaoran begins to develop intimate feelings for Sakura and becomes annoyed when she pays a lot of attention to another guy. You might think he is a bad guy at first, but you’ll realize he is actually a cool kid with a heart of gold as he gradually matures throughout the series.

Each of the Cardcaptor Sakura characters is charming and loveable with their own unique personalities and adorable look. That’s what lands this show in many people’s top five shoujo anime (young women’s anime) list.Who is your favorite main character in Cardcaptor Sakura?
