Animal cafes are very famous in Tokyo! Because of all the cute pets you can play with at a very reasonable price it has become a well-visited tourist attraction! It began with cats and now there are owls, miniature pigs and even snakes! Σ(T□T) Pets in Japan are given extreme care and love, you’ll hardly find any cages on your visit to some of the cafes, but instead you’ll be welcome to roam freely and play with your furry friends!

Some pet cafes also give their pets ‘off-time’, which means that customers are not allowed to pet or be near them so they can rest. With all of this in mind, we’ve put together the top pet cafes to spend your time with fun, loving and interesting pets!

1. Mipig Cafe

Located in Meguro City, it is usually open from 10am to 8pm everyday. It is the first miniature pig cafe in Japan! There are, however, many pigs to pet from kids to adults! You can relax with the micro pigs where you can eat a snack, read a book, or even take a nap! Keep in mind that you must register through their website before you visit. You should be there at least 5 minutes before your allocated time. The first 30 minutes is 800 yen with an additional 500 yen for every 30 minutes after. One drink order is required for every person which is usually 600 yen or more, and children under elementary school are free of charge.

2. Ikefukurou Owl Cafe

Located in Toshima City, it is open on weekdays from 1pm to 8pm and weekends from 12pm to 7pm. This cafe is a place where different types of owls can enjoy your company. Since birth, the owls have been cared for by the staff with much love and have grown up around people. You get to carry them around and pet them. There is also a friendly meerkat, sugar-glider and hedgehogs in this cafe. Priority is given to customers with reservations and you can make a reservation by email or calling the cafe. Cover charge on weekdays is 1500 yen and weekends is 1,600 yen.

3. Harajuku Mame-Shiba Cafe

Harajuku’s Takeshita-dori is an iconic street in Shibuya City. Fashion and food are bustling here! Mame-shiba inu (dog) is a smaller version of Shiba inu, Japan’s most commonly known breed. Weekday business hours are between 11 am and 7 pm and weekends between 10:30am and 7:30pm. The cafe has a modern twist to Japanese style interior with tatami flooring and low tables for you to experience. It is 880 yen for adults and 580 yen for children (6-12 years of age). Children between 0 and 5 years of age are not allowed to enter. Side note: you can buy a combined ticket for their owl café, which is 1400 yen for adults and 1000 yen for children.

4. Chiku Chiku Cafe

This cafe is in Shibuya City as well. This is a magical world with lovely hedgehogs that play inside dollhouses! Just a two-minute walk from Shibuya station, you can enjoy a great time petting them, feeding them and taking pictures. Opening hours are from 11am to 7pm. Pricing: 30 minutes 1,300 yen, 60 minutes 2,500 yen, snack 400 yen, 60 minutes private 32,000 yen. They do not serve any food and drinks are available through a vending machine. Admission is free of charge for children 3 years or younger.

5. Cat Cafe MoCHA

You can relax while you’re surrounded by cats in this cafe! MoCHA cat stores are located around Tokyo, but most frequently visited is MoCHA Shibuya. It’s a 5-minute walk from Shibuya Station, timings are usually daily from 10 am to 10 pm. Price is 200 yen for 10 minutes, cat snacks are 500 yen and drinks will be charged separately. Trust me, you’ll never want to leave once you enter! The cats are way too adorable! The cafe’s design is focused on keeping cats in mind with plenty of hiding spots to relax in.

6. Moff-rell Rabbit Cafe

Akihabara might not be the first place that comes to mind when you think about relaxing with animals, but Akiba also has their fair share of pet cafes! One of the most recommended would be Moff-rell Rabbit Cafe! Located within a 5 minute walk from Akihabara Station, this adorable place is 30 minutes for 1,100 yen (with free drink and rabbit snack included!), 60 minutes for 1,550 again with free drinks and snacks and for every extra 30 minutes it’s only an extra 600 yen. Want more snacks for your bunnies? Only an additional 200 yen! You can sit with a variety of bunny pals and they may even be switched out for new ones after a while. You’ll probably end up spending more time there than you’d think!

Rest assured though, no matter what your favourite pet or animal is, you can probably find a pet cafe for it in Tokyo. Unless it’s a super large animal, and then there’s always the zoo!
