Mori Chack is one of the most revered illustrators and creators when it comes to alternative kawaii culture. Along with All Purpose Bunny, his character Gloomy Bear is especially popular and boasts a legion of fans worldwide who seek to collect any new merch that they can get their hands on!
Oftentimes, the most popular kawaii characters become known through manga or anime series, and eventually garner enough fans to usher in waves of cool goods and collectibles. With Mori Chack’s creations, he’s taken a different approach and has continually pleased a wide base of followers by regularly releasing new plushie designs of his most popular characters. These plushies are the same lovable Gloomy Bear or All Purpose Bunny, but they receive color updates, special seasonal motifs, new sizes, and all sorts of imaginative touches for an always exciting new item!
What’s more, Mori Chack’s ever-evolving collection of cool plushies are quite exclusive! They’re almost instant collector’s items as soon as they hit the market because the majority of his creations are only available at crane game machines, sometimes called UFO catchers, at arcades in Japan. This arcade-only collection is dubbed ‘Chax GP’, and has been supplying Japanese game centers with an eclectic mix of eye-catching Bears & Bunnies for just over 20 years now.
Catching a new Chax GP prize is somewhat like a scavenger hunt. You’ll have to first find out what arcades carry which new items and from which date? Plus, how many of the items do the arcades have in stock? In one sense this makes it a race against time, but on the other hand, if you know which new design you’d like to get your hands on, it’s extra satisfying once you catch yours! Some designs are rarer than others, and this adds to the appeal of this ever-growing yet limited collection.
You may wonder how to get your hands on these awesome prizes when they are seemingly only available within Japan. First, there are many collectors who do the work of winning them and then selling them online to overseas fans. But what’s even better is that there actually is a way to play these cranes that are physically in Japan, while you are physically outside Japan!
How? You can play Japanese arcade crane games 24/7 from your phone with our very own Japanese crane game app TokyoCatch! While it’s true that we can’t promise there to be Chax GP items always in stock to win, quite often there are! This way you can be cozy at home and still enjoy the excitement and fun of Japanese arcades!
As we mentioned earlier, the Chax GP range never fails to surprise fans with cool new designs that you won’t want to miss out on! Let’s take a look at just a few of the cutest All Purpose Bunny plushies from the collection:
We love how colorful this collection is! At 13cm they’re the perfect size to attach to your favorite bag with the keychain that’s included on one of its ears. With six different colors to choose from it’s hard to pick which one is our absolute favorite. These were released to Taito brand arcade cranes in March of 2021.
Appearing in Taito brand cranes from May of 2021, this variation comes in blue, pink, and purple. The charm is in the flashy, almost gaudy ears. They’re super soft and fluffy and look great tied up on top of Bunny’s head. (Size 28cm)
Released in December of 2020, the perfect timing for a wintry treat! All Purpose Bunny gets a pink or blue makeover with beautiful snowflake patterns decorating its ears and feet.
Take a look at these funky Bunnies! They’re a rather large size at 28cm long, and they come in three awesome color variants. We especially like how the matching eye, nose, feet, and inner ear colors mesh with the body colors. Released at the beginning of 2021, we wonder what they’ll come up with at the beginning of 2022!
This shape is just too cute! Released in May of 2019 and made in a shape similar to that of a special Gloomy Bear plushie that garnered particularly good reaction from customers, we think this design is so much fun! The material is especially soft and squeezy like mochi, and since it comes in just two colors it’s not too difficult to collect (we’d definitely try catching both!).
Which of these designs is your favorite? Do you have another All Purpose Bunny plushie at home that’s super unique? And if you were in charge of designing these arcade-exclusive plushies, what would yours look like? Let us know your thoughts in the comments!
